At our school, we prioritize the health and well-being of every student by providing accessible and comprehensive health services. This page outlines the policies and procedures related to health services, including care provided by the school nurse, medication management, handling of health emergencies and wellness guidelines.

School Nurse Availability

The school nurse or clerk is available to address students' health concerns during the school day. Students must obtain a pass from their teacher to visit the nurse or office for medical reasons.

Medication Policy

  • Prescription Medication: Parents or guardians must provide prescription medication in its original container along with the doctor’s instructions for administration. A signed consent form is required for the school to administer medication. Upon arrival at school, students must turn in prescription medication to the clerk or nurse. Prescription medication is considered a controlled substance.
  • Over-the-counter medication: Upon arrival, students must turn in any over-the-counter medication to the clerk or nurse. The school provides select over-the-counter medications, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen, cough drops, and Pepto-Bismol, which require parental permission given during registration.

Illness and Student Dismissal

Parents or guardians must pick up students who become ill during the school day. A student must have verbal permission to leave school if the parent or guardian cannot pick them up. In such cases, a school social worker may provide transportation.

Food Allergies

Parents or guardians must document all food allergies on the student registration form each year and provide updates as needed. A doctor’s statement must be on file, and the office must be notified of any new or continuing allergies. The principal will inform relevant staff to ensure proper precautions are taken.

Health Emergencies

In a health emergency, the school promptly assesses the situation and takes appropriate action. If the situation is life-threatening or serious, the school immediately contacts EMS (911) and follows their instructions. For non-life-threatening emergencies, the school consults with the school nurse or local hospital ER for guidance. The school notifies the parent or guardian when medical care is arranged. School administrators are informed, and a Critical Incident Report is filed. Follow-up care is provided as needed.

Wellness Policy

Our school encourages healthy lifestyles by adhering to strict nutritional guidelines:

  • Beverages and food items must contain fewer than 20 grams of sugar per serving and must not contain artificial sugars.
  • Energy drinks are prohibited.
  • Food items brought into the school must align with USDA MyPlate guidelines.

Parents and guardians can access the Wellness Policy PDF for more information about our school’s commitment to student health and wellness or request a copy from the front office if needed.
